owls at the Roc du Lapin
Mi-mars 2022, we installed a nest box in the attic of the gîte, thinking we could accommodate several kinds of birds, and in particular kestrels or barn owls. Bingo, barely a month later, a couple of barn owls have taken up residence there.

Mid-July, the young move about in the nest, are quite active, and we can count 4 of them, the mother no longer stays with them during the day, both parents feed them at night.

Equipped with two cameras, we can follow the couple's activities live:
On May 14, the first egg was laid, there will be 7 in total, laid at an interval 2 to 3 days between each.
on June 14, the first owl hatched, the other hatchings follow at the same rate as the laying of the eggs, since the mother begins to brood from the first laying.
Difficult to know how many hatched, and the sequence of the first events of their life, because the female had installed in the blind spot of the camera, but we were able to count at least 5 hatched owls.
The addition of a new camera outside the nest box will allow to better see the comings and goings of the parents and the small ones at the time of their first exit. While waiting for the next breeding season, many birds visit the area, including a tawny owl on December 6, 2022.
